I am a Paramedic of 15 years, with a Career Fire Dept in Maryland. To say I interact with the Health Care system is redundant but I do. Recently my interaction was decidedly personal. I found that I was getting up 5-6 times a night to go to the bathroom. How aggravating is that!!! To make matters worse, I suspected it was a prostate issue - I know the signs and symptoms well - I had lost my Grandfather to Prostate Cancer and my Father had just undergone treatment for Prostate Cancer.
Add in High Blood pressure (HTN) and you have a desperate situation for a young man of 45. Not wanting to be chemically dependent for the rest of my life, I convinced my MD to let me treat the Prostate issue with "alternative" methods - primarily Saw Palmetto and Betasitasterol - both are proven therapeutic substances.
I would work on the High Blood Pressure (and high cholesterol) with diet and exercise.
By the end of the 4th month, I had resigned myself to drugs. Nothing I tried produced the results that I needed. I had switched to a Vegetarian diet, faithfully consumed in excess of $300.00 a month of vitamins, minerals, herbs and bottled water.
And the result - Not much...I had lost a little weight, 2-3 lbs, my blood pressure also remained the same and most disheartening of all, I was still getting up 4-6 times a night.
About this time, I had a friend involved in a serious car wreck. My recovery time from strenuous exercise has shortened from 2-3 days to 2-3 hours which means I can play 36 holes and not be sore for a couple days after!
